Three Workshop Examples
1: No one objects
Making decisions with a team can take ages.
We want everyone to agree. However, for many decisions, it doesn't matter if the whole team agrees.
You just need to make A decision, to learn if it's the right one.
It's better to make a couple of "wrong" decisions fast, as long as the potential impact of the decision is manageable and reversible.
Consent decision-making ensures that your team doesn't get bogged down in endless debate over minor issues that need quick action.
⏱️ When to use?
A fast decision is needed on an issue that is clearly defined and has a limited and reversible impact.
👉 How to do consent decision-making:
- One person clearly states the proposal.
- Review the rules (no interruptions & aim for "safe to try").
- What questions do people have?
- What reaction does the proposer have?
- Restate the proposal (if necessary).
- What objections do people have?
(Keep restating the proposal until all objections are handled)
- State the final decision and communicate it.
2: Everyone must agree
Here is a workshop format in case you DO need everyone on board.
⏱️ When to use?
A decision that will impact many people should involve their valuable insights and candid negotiation.
👉 How to do consensus decision-making:
- Clearly state the problem or opportunity.
- Brain-write all possible options.
- What option would you prefer? (non-binding vote)
- Make a case for the option you feel strongly about.
- Do another non-binding vote.
(Repeat steps 3-5, until everyone agrees with the decision.)
- State the final decision and communicate it.
3: Let’s wait and see
However, sometimes, the best decision is to make no decision at all.
But only when it's a conscious decision to make no decision (see what I did there? 😂).
⏱️ When to use?
There is little reward for getting an ambiguous situation right, but major penalties for getting it wrong.
👉 How to do avoidant decision-making:
- Assess the situation and obvious information.
- List under what circumstances a decision is absolutely necessary.
- How and when will you reevaluate the situation?
- List who needs to be informed that you don't decide right now.
Now it's up to you to decide which one you want to try. Let me know with a reply how it worked out 💬.
